Access to Information

Canada’s federal Access to Information Act is a frequently used tool by various stakeholders to seek information held by a ministry or enforcement agency, like the CFIA, respecting a specific topic or entity. An Access to Information request can reveal information about an enforcement action, the activities of a competitor, or simply what policymakers are considering as they develop positions on future laws, regulations, or guidance materials.

Our firm works with those who are seeking information, whether they be activists, non-governmental organizations or those subject to regulatory enforcement, as well as those who have provided the federal government with information but wish to limit its wider release. We have significant knowledge related to the Access to Information Act and comparable provincial legislation, specifically as it relates to food sector stakeholders, and have negotiated with the federal government regarding access to information issues on behalf of our clients.
